As you may have heard, NASA headquarters has decided to terminate operations for the Wind spacecraft at the end of 2027. Wind, launched in 1994, has been in orbit near L1 since 2004, where it makes high quality measurements of solar wind plasma, radio waves, magnetic and electric fields, energetic particles, and gamma rays.
Several members of the community have written a letter expressing our support for continued Wind operations, emphasizing the unique measurements and characteristics of the Wind mission. We encourage you to read the letter and add your signature by next Thursday, October 22 if you agree with its conclusion: Wind provides the community with high impact and irreplaceable science data, and Wind operations should continue. Scientists from Europe are welcome as well to sign this letter, to show their support to this mission.
Please feel free to share these links (letter, signature form) to other researchers who may be interested in signing. We welcome signatures from the entire space research community, not simply solar wind researchers who work directly with Wind data in their own research.
Thank you in advance.
