NASA has received the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Decadal Survey on Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) Decadal Survey 2024-2033.

The final report is available for free download at: https://nationalacademies.org/ssp-decadal.

This survey provides recommendations for the next decade of Heliophysics research and missions to advance scientific understanding of the Sun, Sun-Earth connections and the origins of space weather, the Sun’s interactions with other bodies in the solar system, the interplanetary medium, and the interstellar medium. Key recommendations include:

Improvements and advancements for the space weather portfolio, especially regarding multi-agency collaborations.

The development of a strategic modeling program to strengthen the heliophysics community’s capability.

Links, a heterogeneous constellation to study magnetospheric mesoscale dynamics and the global coupling between the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere.

Solar Polar Orbiter, a mission to study the sun’s high-latitude regions in order to understand the processes shaping the solar dynamic and the solar activity cycle.

NASA looks forward to reviewing the recommendations in detail and plans to provide a public response within 90 days. The survey will inform a new chapter in Heliophysics, providing recommendations on ways to support the profession as well as the technologies and infrastructure needed to carry out the science.
