The Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) invites applications for one postdoctoral position entitled “Nowcasting Solar Flares from Synoptic Solar Observations”. The primary aim is to study the identification of short- and long-term indicators of solar flare onset on synoptic observations of the Sun’s photosphere and chromosphere for development of real-time image processing and alerts systems offering guidance for space-weather operations.
The research project will involve analysis of full-disk and high-resolution multi-band observations of the solar atmosphere derived from ground- and space-based telescopes.
Applicants with experience in solar atmospheric processes relevant for the onset of flares and for space weather and properties and phenomena of the solar magnetism at small- and large-scales are encouraged to apply.
The position is funded for one year, with the possibility of an extension based on the continued availability of funding and performance.
A PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, Astronomy or related fields is required, or a Master’s degree and three years of research activity.
The closing date for applications is August 29, 2026.
Questions can be directed to Mariarita Murabito and Ilaria Ermolli.
